Dietitians believe in the power of food to enhance lives and improve health. They empower and help people understand the connection between food and health and work with you to embrace food, to understand it, and to enjoy it. Using the most up-to-date scientific evidence and translating them into practical solutions, dietitians offer advice and information that is tailored to each individual’s personal needs and challenges, to make healthy lifestyle and food choices.
Dietitians work with all age groups and some areas of practice include: healthy eating/general nutrition, healthy weight, adolescent/teen nutrition issues, athletic performance/active living, body image, breastfeeding/infant feeding, child nutrition issues, chronic disease management, men’s and women’s health issues, pregnancy, nutrition for seniors and vegetarianism.
Registered dietitians undergo comprehensive and rigorous education. They are university educated with a degree in human nutrition dietetics with courses focused on food systems, disease management, population health, and communications and counselling. Following their studies, they are required to complete 1250 hours of supervised practical training usually gaining experiences from a combination of clinical, community, and food service management. In addition to their years of education, they participate in quality assurance programs to ensure relevant knowledge and skill for continuing competency.
