Naturopathic Doctors (ND)
Naturopathic Doctors (ND) are experts in natural health, and are trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat acute and chronic illness to restore and establish optimal health by supporting the person’s inherent self-healing process. Rather than just suppressing symptoms, NDs work on identifying the underlying causes of illness, and develop personalized treatment plans to address them. Treatment by an ND is an individualized and whole-body approach that may include lifestyle counselling, clinical nutrition, botanical/herbal medicine, natural health product (NHP) supplementation, and other patient-specific treatments.
NDs obtain comprehensive and rigorous training in an educational structure similar to that of medical doctors. They require a minimum of three years of pre-med post secondary education, plus four years of full-time study at an approved college of naturopathic medicine. The four year naturopathic medical program incorporates over 4,500 hours of classroom training in medical science courses, clinical sciences and naturopathic therapies, as well as 1,500 hours of supervised clinical experience. In addition to their years of education, they are required to participate in continuing education and quality assurance programs to ensure they maintain their high professional standards and quality of care.
NDs are a regulated profession in Alberta under the Health Professions Act. Our doctors are registered with College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta (CNDA) and professional associations (AAND and CAND).
