Ozone Therapy

Ozone (O3) is a naturally-occurring gas with a wide range of medical applications. It is useful to think of ozone as “supercharged” oxygen.  In addition to antimicrobial activity (for fighting infections), ozone has been found to improve circulation and oxygen delivery, stimulate cellular repair mechanisms, and modulate the immune system.

Medical ozone has a history lasting over 150 years.  It was used in the First World War as a topical treatment for soldiers with infected wounds.  Since then – and through decades of research and innovation – various applications of medical ozone have emerged around the world.  In addition to topical use, ozone can be administered by injection (into a tissue),  intravenously (into a vein), or insufflated (into a body cavity).

Some common conditions where medical ozone may be indicated:

  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Chronic Pain
  • Detoxification
  • Diabetic Complications
  • Heart Disease
  • Infections
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease

At The Longevity Lab, the most common ozone treatment is “ozone major autohemotherapy (MAH)”;  an intravenous procedure in which a patient’s blood is treated with ozone.  This treatment is very well tolerated, and many patients notice improvements in their health after only a few treatments.

Ozone therapy is administered by our naturopathic doctors who have taken advanced training in medical ozone therapies.

An initial consultation with a Naturopathic Doctor is required for all new patients to determine if ozone therapy is appropriate. If deemed appropriate, an individualized treatment plan based on your medical history, health concerns, and goals, will be recommended. The cost of treatment thereafter will depend on the ozone application you are prescribed.

Frequently asked questions

When administered by a trained health professional and properly used, ozone therapy is extremely safe with little to no side effects. A study entitled “Accident and Typical Complications in Ozone Therapy” reported that of 5.5 million treatment sessions of 384,775 patients the complication rate was 0.0007%, or roughly 1 in every 150,000 patients treated.

During the initial consultation, our naturopathic doctor will discuss ozone therapy with you to decide if it is safe and the most appropriate course of treatment for your condition.

We use very small needles / IV catheters which helps make ozone therapy nearly painless!  Our health professionals are authorized to perform ozone therapy and have many years of experience administering these treatments. They also take great care to minimize the likelihood of adverse reactions, and maximize the potential benefits of treatment.

Many health insurance benefit programs do offer full or partial coverage for ozone therapy when administered by our health professionals.

The number and frequency of treatment vary with the severity of your condition, age, and overall health status.  Our health professionals will work together with you to make a treatment plan and decide an appropriate frequency and number of treatments based on your unique health needs.

For IV ozone MAH, the total treatment time is approximately 60-75 minutes.  Ozone injections or insufflation treatments typically take 15-45 minutes.
